Al-Hira Archaeological Site

Al-Hira is an archaeological site and the location of an ancient city in what is now Najaf Governorate, Iraq. It was historically significant as the seat of the Lakhmid Arab kings and a centre of late-antique culture in the region.

The city’s prominence spans the late Roman and Sasanian periods into the early Islamic era, when it functioned as a regional political and cultural hub. Archaeological remains testify to multi-layered occupation and the site’s role in regional trade and politics.

In historical sources Al-Hira is noted for its Christian and Arabic literary activity as well as for its political role under the Lakhmids between roughly the 3rd and 7th centuries CE.
