Imabari Castle
Castle Feudal Japanese castle notable for surrounding seawater moats
Imabari Castle in Ehime stands on a tidal moat with original stonework and a restored keep; visitors tour ramparts, castle grounds and nearby seaside views along the Shimanami Kaido.
Imabari Castle is a coastal castle in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, on Japan’s Shikoku island, distinguished by moats that incorporate seawater from the Seto Inland Sea. The original castle complex dates to the early 17th century and was established under the local feudal lord Kato Yoshiaki.
The site includes a keep, stone walls and multiple baileys, with the moats and ramparts forming part of the defensive arrangement. Today the castle compound contains museum displays covering local history and the castle’s role, and the grounds are open to the public for walks and views over the harbour.
Constructed in the early Edo period by Kato Yoshiaki following regional consolidation, the castle has undergone repairs and conservation work over time to maintain its stonework and buildings. It has served historically as a local administrative and defensive centre for the Imabari domain.
Located on the waterfront of Imabari city, the castle sits beside Imabari harbour and overlooks the Seto Inland Sea. It is within easy reach of the town centre and local ferry and road connections.
- Seawater moats: Noted for its seawater-filled moats that connect the castle site visually to the Seto Inland Sea and harbour, making the fortification a notable example of a coastal castle in Japan.
- Visitor facilities: The castle grounds include museum exhibits about local history; visiting routes typically circle the bailey and provide views over Imabari harbour.
