Ilulissat Icefjord

Nature Reserve Glacial fjord filled with drifting icebergs and calving glaciers

Glacier-fed fjord where Sermeq Kujalleq calves icebergs into Disko Bay; boat excursions, coastal trails and lookout platforms give close views of fast-moving glacier ice and drifting bergs.

Main image

The Ilulissat Icefjord is a glacial fjord on Greenland’s west coast that links the fast-flowing Sermeq Kujalleq glacier to Disko Bay and the North Atlantic, producing large numbers of icebergs. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004 for its outstanding glaciological phenomena and scientific importance.

The fjord is famous for visible iceberg calving from the glacier and for the dense field of icebergs that fill the mouth of the fjord, offering dramatic iceberg-watching from coastal viewpoints and by boat excursions. The glacier is one of Greenland’s most active outlet glaciers and is important for scientific observation of ice dynamics and climate-related change.

The fjord and its glacier are natural features shaped by Quaternary glaciation; the area has long been used by local Inuit communities and has attracted scientific study and exploration in modern times because of the glacier’s rapid flow and calving activity. The site received international recognition for its glaciological value in the early 21st century.

Located on West Greenland beside the town of Ilulissat, the Icefjord opens into Disko Bay on the Greenlandic coast; the town serves as the main gateway for visitors and researchers.

  • Viewing tips: The fjord extends from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier to Disko Bay and is notable for frequent iceberg calving; visit by boat or from coastal viewpoints near the town of Ilulissat to observe calving events and drifting icebergs.
  • UNESCO status: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004 for its natural processes related to ice production and glacial dynamics and their global scientific importance.
