Île Saint-Louis is a small, inhabited island in the Seine at the heart of Paris, adjacent to Île de la Cité in the 4th arrondissement. It is noted for its compact 17th-century urban fabric of stone townhouses and narrow streets and has been mainly residential since its construction.

The island’s main attractions are its riverside quays, historic façades and a handful of long-standing cafes and shops that serve both residents and visitors. It is prized as a quieter, walkable part of central Paris with straightforward access to the major monuments on the Île de la Cité and the Rive Gauche and Rive Droite.

The island was built up in the 17th century on former islets in the Seine and retains much of that period street plan and building stock. Its compact size means most visits are on foot and focused on the main street, quays and the parish church.

Île Saint-Louis sits in central Paris between the two river banks and immediately east of Île de la Cité; it is in the city centre and easily reached from nearby metro stations and pedestrian bridges.

• Rue Saint-Louis en l’Île: A single principal street crosses the island and contains most of the historic townhouses, shops and the long-standing ice cream shop that is a local landmark.
• Quays and riverside facades: The quays that run along the Seine provide views across to the Île de la Cité and are lined with 17th‑ and 18th‑century stone townhouses.

Île Saint-Louis is in central Paris and can be reached on foot from either bank of the Seine. The closest metro stops are Pont Marie (line 7) on the island’s eastern side and Saint-Paul (line 1) on the western side-both are a 2-5 minute walk onto the island. The island is also a short walk from Hôtel de Ville and the Île de la Cité.

• Visit early in the morning or after dinner to enjoy Île Saint‑Louis before daytime tourist groups arrive; the island is compact so early or late visits feel especially peaceful.
