Igreja de São Roque
Religious Site Historic Lisbon church with ornate Baroque interior chapels
Beyond Rossio, São Roque preserves one of Lisbon’s most lavish 16th-18th-century interiors, including a gold-covered chapel and Baroque altars; tourists visit for the chapel, Jesuit history and nearby museum displays.
Igreja de São Roque is a 16th-century Jesuit church in central Lisbon famous for its plain exterior and richly decorated Baroque interior chapels, particularly the ornate Chapel of St. John the Baptist.
The interior contains highly decorated side chapels with polychrome marble, gilding and carved ornamentation, along with azulejo panels and a sacristy museum exhibiting religious art and liturgical objects. The Chapel of St. John the Baptist is a principal attraction because of its exceptional materials and craftsmanship.
Built by the Society of Jesus in the 16th century, the church was expanded and redecorated in the Baroque period; elements of the interior were manufactured abroad and installed to create the church’s celebrated chapels. The building has served successive religious functions while preserving distinctive decorative programs.
Situated in central Lisbon near the Bairro Alto and Chiado districts, the church is within walking distance of other central historic sites.

Igreja de São Roque sits in central Lisbon in the Chiado/Bairro Alto area. It’s about a 5-10 minute walk from Baixa‑Chiado metro station (Blue and Green lines) and also within easy walking distance from Rossio and the tram 28 route, which passes nearby.
The church is in the pedestrianised streets of Chiado, so arriving on foot or by short taxi from central Lisbon is easiest.
Tips for Visiting Igreja de São Roque #
- Visit first thing in the morning or mid‑afternoon to avoid tour groups from nearby Chiado and to get better light for the church's gilded chapels and painted ceilings.
- Buy the separate ticket for the sacristy/museum inside the church-this small museum and the side chapels contain ornate altarpieces and decorative panels that many visitors miss when only viewing the main nave.
- The church is compact but full of detailed baroque decoration; allow time to read the explanatory panels or ask staff about key works (several chapels were imported from other European workshops and have conservation labels).
