Igman is a mountain and recreational area just southwest of Sarajevo in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, known for its forested slopes and mountain trails.
The area provides marked trails, picnic spots and ski routes in winter, with accessible slopes and panoramic views over the Sarajevo valley from the higher ground. Remnants of 20th-century sporting infrastructure and trails established for major events remain visible.
Igman was used as a competition venue during the 1984 Winter Olympics held in Sarajevo and later saw strategic use during the 1990s conflicts in Bosnia. Since the 1990s the area has been used again for recreation and memorialisation.
The mountain lies immediately to the southwest of Sarajevo, within easy driving distance of the city and forming part of the Dinaric mountain region.

How to Get to Igman #
Igman is a mountain plateau near Sarajevo. It is reached by car from Sarajevo via the Ilidža/Koševo roads and local mountain roads (roughly a 20-40 minute drive depending on start point and traffic). There are also local buses and minibus services from Sarajevo to Ilidža and nearby villages from which short local roads lead up onto Igman; once on the mountain there are marked ski and walking trails.
Tips for Visiting Igman #
- Visit Igman in late spring to early autumn for clear trails and in winter only with a local operator for skiing or tracked access; seasonal contrast means summer offers meadows and forest trails while winter brings organised snow activities.
- Access Igman from Sarajevo via the main road toward Ilidža and follow signposted turnoffs to the Veliko Polje plateau; this is the principal arrival point and provides easy starting points for walks and viewpoints.
- Spend time at the Veliko Polje plateau and the marked lookout points - these flat meadows and ridges are the most scenic parts of the mountain and often missed by visitors who only stop briefly en route.
