How to Get to Ifrane#

Ifrane is most commonly reached via Fes-Saïss Airport (FEZ) and by rail to Gare d’Ifrane on the ONCF network. FEZ is the nearest airport (roughly an hour-hour and a half by road/train); Rabat and Casablanca airports are farther but offer more international connections.

By Air

Fes-Saïss Airport (FEZ): FEZ is the closest airport to Ifrane and is the usual arrival point for visitors. From the airport take the airport shuttle or a local taxi to Gare de Fès (shuttle/taxi ≈ 20-40 MAD, 15-25 minutes), then an ONCF train from Fès to Gare d’Ifrane (about 1-1.5 hours; second-class tickets typically ≈ 15-40 MAD). If you prefer door-to-door, a private taxi/transfer from FEZ straight to Ifrane takes roughly 1h10-1h30 and usually costs in the region of 400-600 MAD depending on vehicle and season.

Rabat-Salé Airport (RBA): Rabat-Salé is a viable alternative if you have more international connection options. From RBA take a bus or taxi to Rabat-Ville/Agdal station (≈ 20-40 MAD, 20-30 minutes) and then an ONCF train to Ifrane (approximately 2.5-3.5 hours; fares commonly ≈ 70-150 MAD depending on class). Driving or a private transfer from Rabat to Ifrane is about 3-3.5 hours by road.

By Train & Bus

Train: Ifrane is served by Gare d’Ifrane on the ONCF network. Regular regional trains connect Ifrane with Fès (around 1-1.5 hours) and onward to Meknès and Rabat; second-class fares for short regional hops are typically in the low tens of MAD (≈ 15-40 MAD) while longer intercity journeys toward Rabat/Casablanca cost more. Tickets can be bought at stations or via ONCF.ma and trains are generally the most comfortable public option for reaching the town.

Bus: Intercity coach operators (CTM and other regional carriers) and local buses link Ifrane with Fès, Meknès and neighbouring towns; journeys from Fès by coach take about 1-1.5 hours and usually cost roughly 30-70 MAD. For short regional hops and routes not well served by coaches, shared “grand taxis” operate from the main ranks and are often quicker though prices and departure times are less formal.

How to Get Around Ifrane#

Ifrane is a compact town where walking covers most local needs, while trains and grand taxis are the practical choices for reaching Fès, Meknès and neighbouring destinations. If you plan to explore the Middle Atlas widely, a rental car gives the most flexibility; otherwise rely on ONCF trains and CTM coaches for comfortable regional travel.

  • ONCF trains (15-150 MAD) - Trains are the most reliable public option for regional travel. Gare d’Ifrane has regular services to Fès (about 1-1.5 hours) and onward to Meknès and Rabat; trains are comfortable and inexpensive, tickets can be bought at the station or online at ONCF.ma. For day trips to Fes or Azrou the train is convenient and avoids road traffic.
  • Grand taxi (shared or private) (50-600 MAD) - Grand taxis (shared 6-seaters or private hire) are essential for reaching smaller towns and for flexible point-to-point travel. Shared fares for nearby routes (e.g., Fès-Ifrane) are commonly in the lower tens to low hundreds of MAD per person; hiring a full taxi privately for a direct transfer is significantly more (several hundred MAD). Expect to negotiate prices for private hires and to depart when the taxi fills for shared trips.
  • CTM & intercity coaches (30-120 MAD) - CTM and other coach companies connect Ifrane with Fès, Meknès and longer-distance destinations. Coaches are comfortable, run on scheduled timetables, and are a good value for medium-distance trips; journeys from Fès are typically around 1-1.5 hours. Buy tickets at CTM offices or at the station; services can be less frequent than trains on some routes.
  • Local taxis & minibuses (10-50 MAD) - Within Ifrane, petit taxis (or local minibuses where available) handle short hops around town. Fares are low for short rides (metered in larger cities, negotiated in smaller towns), and taxis are useful when carrying luggage or when temperatures are low. Note that Ifrane is compact so many trips inside town are short and inexpensive.
  • Car rental / Driving (300-700 MAD/day) - Renting a car gives the greatest flexibility for exploring the Middle Atlas (Cedars Forest, day trips to Azrou or the ski areas). Roads are generally good but mountain weather can be challenging in winter-snow chains may be required. Petrol and rental costs make this better for multi-day itineraries or groups rather than solo short stays.
  • Walking - Ifrane is small and very walkable: many main sights, parks and hotels are clustered and pleasant to explore on foot. Walking is the best way to appreciate the town’s Alpine-style architecture and green spaces, but plan alternate transport for trips into the surrounding mountains or other towns.
