Idjwi (also spelled Ijwi) is an inhabited island in Lake Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is the largest island within Lake Kivu and is part of South Kivu province.
The island is primarily agricultural and highly populated in places, with small settlements, cultivated hillsides and lakeshore communities. Travel on and off the island is by boat from lakeshore towns on the Congolese and Rwandan sides of Lake Kivu.
Human settlement on Idjwi predates modern national borders, with local communities engaged in fishing and farming for generations. Administratively it has been part of the South Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the post-colonial period.
Idjwi lies near the midpoint of Lake Kivu, between the Congolese mainland and the Rwandan shore. The island is several kilometers from the nearest large lakeshore towns and is accessed by regular small-boat crossings.
