Ichijodani Asakura Family Historic Ruins is an archaeological and historic site in Fukui Prefecture that preserves the remains of a 15th- to 16th-century castle town once controlled by the Asakura clan. The site covers the foundations and street plan of a medieval urban settlement and is presented as an open-air park.
The excavated town area reveals street layouts, residential and merchant quarter foundations, and the layout of public spaces across a broad valley floor, with paths and explanatory signage for self-guided walks. An on-site museum displays artifacts recovered from the site and offers interpretive exhibits about the town’s structure and daily life. The park includes reconstructed elements and garden areas used to illustrate the scale and organization of the original settlement.
The site served as the political and economic centre for the Asakura clan during the Muromachi period; the town was developed in the 15th century and remained important until it was destroyed in the late 16th century during the wars of unification. Modern archaeological excavations since the 20th century have uncovered the town plan and recovered large numbers of artifacts now exhibited at the museum.
Located in Fukui Prefecture in central Honshu, the ruins lie in a valley near the modern village area associated with Ichijodani and are accessible from the city of Fukui and local towns in the region.
