Ibiza Cathedral

The Catedral de Santa María de las Nieves sits on the summit of Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town and is the seat of the local Catholic diocese. The present building dates mainly from medieval construction phases spanning roughly the 14th to 16th centuries and occupies a fortified position above the town.

The cathedral is notable for its Gothic interior spaces, cloister and bell tower, and it functions as a principal viewpoint over the harbour and old town. Visitors also use the cathedral area to access the ramparts and narrow streets of Dalt Vila and to photograph the harbour and coastline from the elevated plaza.

Built on the site of an earlier mosque after the medieval Catalan conquest of the island, the cathedral’s fabric reflects successive building phases over several centuries and later modifications in style and decoration. It has long served as the town’s principal church and episcopal seat.

Sited at the top of Dalt Vila, the cathedral overlooks Ibiza harbour and the channel out to the Balearic Sea. It is within walking distance of the port area and the main shopping streets of Ibiza Town.
