Administrative Seat Ancient Carian coastal city ruins with classical remains
An ancient Greek city on the Aegean coast with ruined walls, a Roman theatre and a small fishing harbour. Visitors combine archaeological remains with seaside tavernas and nearby bays for swimming and snorkelling.
Iasos (Iassos) is an archaeological site on the Aegean coast of southwestern Turkey in Muğla Province, representing a classical Greek city with Hellenistic and Roman phases. The site retains visible ruins of public buildings, fortifications and waterfront remains.
Visitors can walk among stone ruins that include terraces of an ancient theatre, foundations of agora buildings and stretches of city walls. The coastal setting exposes harbor-related features and gives a sense of the city’s historic maritime orientation. Interpretation on site is variable, and many features are best appreciated with an archaeological guide or published plan.
Founded in the classical period, the city developed through Hellenistic and Roman times and was occupied into Byzantine periods; its masonry, inscriptions and urban plan reflect these successive phases. Over time the site was partially buried and later excavated in archaeological campaigns that revealed the theatre, public squares and defensive works.
