Halicarnassus was an ancient Greek city on the Aegean coast at the site of modern Bodrum in Muğla Province, Turkey, notable as the location of the Mausoleum of Mausolus built in the mid-4th century BCE. The Mausoleum was celebrated as one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.

Visitors to modern Bodrum can explore the castle, local museums and scattered archaeological remains associated with ancient Halicarnassus. The Mausoleum’s former site and the city’s classical layout are points of historical interest, and many decorative fragments are conserved and displayed in regional and international collections.

The juxtaposition of the medieval Bodrum Castle and the classical ruins illustrates the site’s long sequence of occupation and reuse.

Halicarnassus flourished under the Hecatomnid dynasty and became famous for the construction of the Mausoleum for Mausolus and Queen Artemisia around 350 BCE. The Mausoleum was later destroyed by earthquakes and its stones were reused in subsequent medieval constructions, including material employed in building Bodrum Castle by the Knights Hospitaller.

The ancient city occupies the peninsula now occupied by Bodrum on Turkey’s southwestern Aegean coast, with the modern town and harbour built over and around the classical remains.
