Main image

Hyde Park is a central public park in the Sydney central business district and is recognised as the oldest public parkland in Australia, with origins dating to the early 19th century.

The park contains broad lawns and tree-lined avenues running roughly north-south through the CBD, with formal paths, benches and planted beds. Key monuments include the ANZAC Memorial at the southern end and the Archibald Fountain toward the north; the park is used for ceremonies, informal recreation and city events.

Set aside as public ground in the early 1800s, the park was landscaped and progressively developed through the 19th and early 20th centuries. The ANZAC Memorial and Archibald Fountain were installed between the world wars and remain focal points for remembrance and civic gatherings.

Located in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, the park sits between major city streets and is bordered by commercial districts, with St Marys Cathedral and other central landmarks nearby.

  • Age and layout: One of Australia's oldest public parks, it was reserved as public ground in the early 19th century and retains formal tree-lined avenues and open lawns.
  • Principal monuments: The southern end contains the ANZAC Memorial, and the northern end features the Archibald Fountain; both are principal viewing points.

What to See #

  • ANZAC Memorial: Large stone memorial commemorating Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers, located within the park and designed as a major funerary and remembrance monument.
  • Archibald Fountain: A sculptural fountain located toward the park's northern end, installed in the early 20th century and set in a formal basin with surrounding lawns and plazas.

If driving, follow Park Street/Elizabeth Street into the city - parking in the CBD can be limited, so public transport is usually easiest.

Tips for Visiting Hyde Park, Sydney #

  • Enter Hyde Park from St James or Museum station depending on which end you want to reach: St James gives quickest access to the southern ANZAC Memorial and quieter lawns, while Museum/Elizabeth Street puts you nearer the Archibald Fountain and northern features.
