Hwando

Hwando is an archaeological mountain-fortress site in Jilin province that was a political and military centre of the ancient Goguryeo kingdom. It is recognised for its long occupation as a fortified capital and for the surviving traces of walls, gates and settlement structures.

On-site remains include stone foundations of defensive walls, traces of palatial and administrative areas and associated material culture that document urban and military organisation. The site is one component of a multi-location World Heritage listing that together illustrates the capital cities and funerary culture of Goguryeo.

Excavations and surveys have identified structures and occupation layers dating to the early centuries through to the 7th century AD, demonstrating the site’s use as a regional centre of power in northeastern Asia. Archaeological work focuses on fortification layout, urban planning and artefacts tied to Goguryeo administration and defense.

Hwando lies in Jilin Province in northeastern China, in the borderlands of the Yalu/Amnok River region; the site sits within a mountainous landscape that supported the strategic choice of a fortified capital.
