Israel’s Hula Valley protects wetlands and bird migration routes; visitors arrive for spring and autumn birdwatching, hiking boardwalks and the reserve’s observation hides.
The Hula Valley is a tectonic valley and important wetland area in northern Israel, located in the Upper Galilee just north of the Sea of Galilee. Historically a large marsh, it was drained in the early 1950s for agricultural development, then partially restored in the late 20th century to create protected wetlands.
Today the valley and its reserve areas are a key stopover on the Africa-Eurasia bird migration route, supporting hundreds of bird species and large seasonal movements of waterfowl and cranes. Facilities for visitors include boardwalks, observation towers and managed ponds that provide accessible birdwatching opportunities.
The valley sits between the Galilean hills and the Golan Heights and is a low-lying agricultural and protected landscape with nearby towns and visitor services.
- Drainage and restoration: The valley was largely drained in the early 1950s for agriculture and mosquito control; partial restoration in the 1990s created protected wetlands that support migrating birds.
- Best time to visit: Peak bird migration seasons in spring and autumn are the best times for large concentrations and species variety; viewing facilities include towers and trails.

Tips for Visiting Hula Valley #
- Visit at sunrise or late afternoon during autumn and winter migration (especially November-February) to see large flocks of cranes and migrating raptors when they are most active and lighting is best for photography.
- Enter via the Agamon Hula (Hula Nature Reserve) visitor centre to access the boardwalks, observation towers and hides-these let you get close to reedbeds and wetlands without disturbing birds.
- Avoid weekend bus crowds by going on a weekday and spending time on the longer circular boardwalks and lesser-used hides; many visitors stay only at the main viewpoints and miss the quieter reedbed trails and bird-ringing station information panels.

Visit in autumn (especially October-November) for the peak bird migration, or in spring for the spring passage and milder conditions.
