Hubei Shennongjia

Hubei Shennongjia refers to a mountainous forested area in Hubei province, China, recognised for its rich biodiversity and extensive tracts of primary mountain forest. It forms part of a larger conservation area and is noted for endemic and relict species.

The landscape includes rugged ridges, deep valleys and high peaks; the highest summits reach approximately 3,100 metres and support mixed temperate and subtropical forest communities. The reserve is an important habitat for several endangered and endemic species, most famously the golden snub-nosed monkey.

The vegetation and faunal assemblages reflect long-term ecological continuity, and the area has been managed for conservation with designated nature-reserve status and controlled visitor access.

Shennongjia occupies a remote mountainous massif in northwest Hubei province and is accessed via regional roads and reserve entrances; the site is located away from large urban centres and is experienced through trails and viewpoint platforms.
