Shennongjia is a mountainous region and conservation area in Hubei province, China, recognised for its extensive temperate forests and high biodiversity. The landscape includes deep valleys, high ridges and old-growth forest patches that host numerous endemic and threatened species.
Visitors come for mountain hiking, forest trails and wildlife observation along waymarked routes within the reserve, and to reach viewpoints on high ridges. The area contains summits above 3,000 metres and a range of forest types from broadleaf to coniferous zones, creating rich habitat gradients.
The region has been protected through nature-reserve designations and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2016 for its natural values and intact forest ecosystems. Scientific surveys and conservation management continue to focus on protecting rare species and old-growth stands.
Shennongjia lies in northwest Hubei province, inland from China’s central plains, and is accessed from regional towns via mountain roads that climb into the reserve.
