Huangshan
Mountains Mountain range famed for granite peaks and sea-of-clouds
Huangshan (Yellow Mountains) is known for granite peaks, gnarled pines and seas of cloud; hikers and photographers use cableways, hot springs and sunrise viewpoints to experience the mountain scenery and local Hui architecture in nearby villages.
Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is a granite mountain range in southern Anhui province renowned for its dramatic peaks, twisted pine trees and seas of cloud; it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is a classic subject of Chinese landscape painting and consists of numerous steep granite peaks and scenic hiking routes.
Visitors follow trails and boardwalks to reach named peaks, ridges and viewpoints; the range contains 72 major peaks, with the highest, Lotus Peak, reaching 1,864 metres. Popular activities include ridge hiking, sunrise and sunset viewing, and visits to the mountain hot springs at the foot of the range.
Most of the mountain’s routes and terraces were developed and maintained over centuries, with major modern visitor infrastructure-paths, stairways and cable cars-installed in the 20th century to improve access. Conservation and visitor management have limited development on the summits while concentrating services at a few valleys and cable-car stations.
Huangshan is located in southern Anhui province; the main tourist towns at the mountain’s base are Tunxi (Huangshan City) and Tangkou, with road and rail connections to major cities such as Hefei and Shanghai.
- Sunrise/sunset: The area is famous for 'sea of clouds' conditions; many visitors plan to stay overnight on the mountain to watch sunrise and sunset from ridge viewpoints.
- Cable cars: Well-developed cable cars serve several valley-to-ridge routes, making the peaks accessible without long ascents for many visitors.
What to See #
- Lotus Peak: The mountain range's highest summit at 1,864 metres, known for its steep granite peaks and panoramic views.
- Bright Summit: A popular summit ridge and outlook area that receives heavy visitor traffic for sunrise and sunset views and links to many of the mountain's main trails.
- West Sea Grand Canyon: A dramatic, deeply incised canyon on the mountain's west side featuring narrow trails and steep drops; a popular route for more challenging hikes.
How to Get to Huangshan #
Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) scenic area is reached from Huangshan (Tunxi) city. Visitors commonly travel by road or coach from Tunxi city center or Huangshan North Railway Station to the base towns (Tangkou/Tieqiao) and park ticket offices; the transfer typically takes around 1-1.5 hours by car. Regular tourist buses and taxis run between Tunxi, the railway station and the mountain access points.
Tips for Visiting Huangshan #
- Spend at least one night on the mountain to catch both sunset and sunrise-Huangshan's sea-of-clouds and golden light are often outside the peak daylight hours when most tourists are descending.
- Use one of the two main cableways (Yungu or Yuping) to save time and energy on the ascent or descent; selecting your cableway based on your mountain lodging will help you position for the best sunset/sunrise viewpoints.
- Book mountain hotels and cable-car slots in advance during Chinese holidays-on-site accommodation is limited, and day-tripper numbers can overwhelm trails and viewing platforms during peak times.
Best Time to Visit Huangshan #
Best in spring (Apr-May) and autumn (Sep-Nov) for cloud-sea phenomena and clearer mountain views.
