Huang Shan
Mountain Famous granite peaks with pine trees and hot springs
Huang Shan (Yellow Mountain) in Anhui attracts climbers and photographers to granite peaks, twisted pines, sea-of-clouds mornings, hot springs and an extensive network of stone steps and cable cars.
Huang Shan, commonly known as Yellow Mountain, is a mountain range in southern Anhui province, eastern China, celebrated for its granite peaks, gnarled pine trees and atmospheric “sea of clouds.” The range includes 72 notable peaks and its highest summit, Lotus Peak, reaches 1,864 metres.
Popular viewpoints and routes draw hikers, photographers and domestic tourists seeking sunrise, cloud seas and the characteristic pine silhouettes. Visitor infrastructure includes marked trails, mountain hotels and several cable cars that connect valley towns to high scenic areas, making summit ridges accessible without long overnight climbs.
Geologically the granite peaks are the result of uplift and long-term erosion; the scenery has been a central subject of Chinese landscape painting and poetry for many centuries. The area was later developed for tourism with paths, stone steps and cable-car access while conservation measures aim to manage visitor impact.
Huang Shan sits in southern Anhui province near the prefectural city of Huangshan (Tunxi). The mountain massif occupies a compact area of steep ridges and valleys and is accessed from several towns at the mountain base.
- Topography and highlights: Contains 72 notable peaks; the highest point is Lotus Peak at 1,864 metres, and the range is famous for its granite peaks, twisted pines and sea-of-clouds effects.
- World Heritage and cultural importance: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its landscape and cultural significance, and served as a major subject in Chinese painting and literature for centuries.
- Access: Passenger cable cars provide access from valley bases to upper scenic areas, reducing long ascents to short rides for many visitors.
What to See #
- Lotus Peak (Lianhua Feng): The highest summit of the range at 1,864 metres, noted for steep granite faces and classical Huangshan views of pine trees and sea of clouds.
- Bright Summit (Guangming Ding): A summit area at about 1,840 metres popular for sunrise views and panoramic vantage points over the main peak clusters.
- West Sea Grand Canyon (Xihai Grand Canyon): A steep, narrow valley system with rugged granite cliffs, deep gullies and some of the most dramatic hiking routes on the mountain.
How to Get to Huang Shan #
From Huangshan (Tunxi) city - where the nearest railway station and Huangshan Tunxi International Airport are located - take a tourist shuttle or local bus to Tangkou (the main gateway village for the Yellow Mountain Scenic Area). The drive from Tunxi to Tangkou typically takes about 1-1.5 hours by road; from Tangkou you can transfer to the Yungu or Yuping cable cars (short walk from the bus drop-off) to ascend the mountain or begin the hiking trails.
If driving, follow the main provincial roads from Tunxi/Tangkou toward Huangshan Scenic Area and park at the official lots near the cable car stations; many visitors combine public shuttle/bus + cable car to avoid the long uphill hike.
Tips for Visiting Huang Shan #
- Plan to arrive on the mountain for sunset or (for photographers) stay overnight to catch sunrise - Huangshan's famous light is best at those times and the mountain clears of haze more often in early morning.
- Use one of the main cableways (Yungu or Yuping) from the Tangkou/Tunxi side to save many hours of steep ascent and give you more time to explore peak ridges and the West Sea area.
- Avoid Chinese national holidays and Golden Week if you can; visiting midweek outside national holidays drastically reduces the number of people at the classic sunrise/sunset viewing spots.
- Allocate time to hike into the West Sea Grand Canyon or lesser‑used north ridges - these sections are less crowded than the classic Bright Summit/Lotus Peak viewpoints and reward with dramatic scenery.
Best Time to Visit Huang Shan #
Best in spring for blooms or autumn for clear skies and fall colors; avoid peak summer crowds if you prefer quieter trails.
