Main image

Huangguoshu Waterfall is a large waterfall and scenic area in Anshun, Guizhou province, China, famous as one of the biggest waterfalls in East Asia. The main drop measures about 77.8 metres in height and roughly 101 metres across.

The site offers close-up views from platforms and higher viewpoints that show the full breadth of the main fall. A distinctive feature is the Water-Curtain Cave - a passage behind the falling water that visitors can use when conditions allow. The wider park contains multiple smaller falls and scenic viewpoints clustered around the main fall.

The waterfall is a natural feature long appreciated locally; in modern times the area has been developed as a designated scenic and tourist park with pathways, viewing decks, and visitor facilities to manage tourist access. Infrastructure and interpretive facilities were added in the 20th century to accommodate increasing visitation.

The waterfall sits in Anshun, Guizhou province, in southwestern China, within a larger protected scenic area. It is served by regional roads and tourist services operating from Anshun and other Guizhou towns.

  • Best time to see: Flow is at its greatest in the rainy season, when the fall is most impressive, but higher flow can reduce visibility and access to paths behind the curtain of water.
  • Access and viewing: A visitor centre and multiple platforms provide different viewpoints; some paths lead behind the fall but may be closed during high water for safety.

What to See #

  • Main waterfall: The main waterfall is a single curtain of water roughly 77.8 metres high and about 101 metres wide, with viewing platforms placed to see the fall face-on and from above.
  • Water-Curtain Cave (Shuiliandong): A walkway and viewing area behind the waterfall known locally as the Water-Curtain Cave (Shuiliandong) allows visitors to stand behind the falling water when flow and safety conditions permit.
