How to Get to Thanlyin
Thanlyin (Thanyun) is a riverside township just across the Yangon River from central Yangon. Most visitors arrive via Yangon - Yangon International Airport (RGN) for flights and Yangon Central Railway Station for trains - then continue to Thanlyin by taxi, bus or ferry/river taxi across the river.
Yangon International Airport (RGN): Yangon International (Mingaladon) is the closest major airport for Thanlyin. From the airport you can take an airport taxi (voucher counters in arrivals) direct to Thanlyin - journey time is roughly 45-75 minutes depending on traffic and whether you cross the Thanlyin/Thanlyin Bridge; expect approximately 8,000-15,000 MMK (approx. US$4-10) for an airport taxi. There is also an airport shuttle / public bus service into central Yangon (downtown/Pansodan) costing a few hundred kyat; from downtown you can continue to Thanlyin by taxi, public bus or ferry (see Train & Bus card).
Train: Yangon Central Railway Station (Yangon Central) is the main rail hub for long-distance and local trains. National and regional services arrive here; to reach Thanlyin you generally transfer from Yangon Central to local buses, taxis or ferries - rail is useful for arriving from other cities but does not deliver you directly into central Thanlyin.
Bus: Public YBS routes and private buses run between Yangon and Thanlyin (via the Thanlyin bridge or via the Dala ferry crossing). Local bus fares within Yangon and to nearby townships are very low (typically a few hundred kyat); expect the trip from central Yangon to Thanlyin to take about 30-75 minutes depending on route and traffic. Intercity buses to the wider Yangon Region depart from terminals such as Aung Mingalar Bus Terminal; from those terminals you can catch a local bus or taxi to Thanlyin.
How to Get Around Thanlyin
Thanlyin is easiest reached from Yangon by taxi or a combination of ferry plus local bus/taxi. For most visitors a taxi from Yangon or the airport is the simplest, while ferries plus local buses are the cheapest and often faster during peak road traffic. Once in Thanlyin, short distances are walkable and motorbike taxis are handy for last-mile trips.
- Taxi / Airport taxi (8,000-15,000 MMK (approx.)) - Taxis are the most direct way to reach Thanlyin from Yangon and from the airport; airport taxi vouchers are sold in arrivals. Expect a door-to-door trip that is fast when traffic is light but can take significantly longer at peak times. Taxis are convenient if you have luggage or a group, and will usually use the Thanlyin bridge (road route) rather than ferries.
- Public bus (YBS and private buses) (200-700 MMK (typical)) - Local Yangon Bus Service (YBS) and private bus operators serve routes toward Thanlyin and nearby townships. Buses are very cheap and frequent but can be slow in peak traffic and confusing for non-locals - bring a map or ask drivers for the stop near Thanlyin Bridge or the town centre. Good option for budget travellers comfortable with crowded local transport.
- River ferry / boat taxi (200-1,000 MMK (typical)) - Ferry crossings to Dala and river taxis are a traditional, inexpensive way to cross the Yangon River; from Dala you can catch a local bus or taxi to Thanlyin. Ferries are frequent in daylight hours and provide a reliable alternative when road traffic is heavy. Boats are best for scenic short crossings and can be the quickest choice during rush hour on the roads.
- Motorcycle taxi (800-3,000 MMK (typical)) - Motorbike taxis (often called 'okadas' informally) are widely used for short hops and to navigate congested streets; expect a quick trip for short distances but limited space for luggage. Use them for last-mile connections from bus/ferry stops into neighbourhoods; agree the fare up front if there is no meter.
- Private car / ride-hailing (5,000-18,000 MMK (typical)) - Ride-hailing and private-car services operate in Yangon and can be used to reach Thanlyin; they offer door-to-door comfort and digital payment in some apps. They are more expensive than public transport but often more reliable and quicker when you need a guaranteed vehicle or during off-hours. Availability can vary, so check local apps or ask hotels to book a car.
- Walking - Thanlyin's town centre and riverfront are compact enough to explore on foot; walking is the best way to see the local markets, waterfront and historic sites once you're in town. Pavements can be uneven and shade limited, so bring water and comfortable shoes.
