House of the Blackheads

The House of the Blackheads in Riga is a historic guildhouse in the Old Town originally associated with a medieval confraternity of unmarried merchants and shipowners. The building is noted for its ornate façade and central location on Town Hall Square.

The present building features a richly decorated frontage and interior rooms that host a museum and cultural events reflecting the city’s mercantile past. It stands as a reconstructed landmark meant to restore the historic appearance lost during 20th-century destruction.

The Brotherhood of Blackheads occupied a guildhall on this site from the medieval period; the original structure underwent stylistic changes over centuries and was heavily damaged during World War II. The building was reconstructed using archival photographs and documents and reopened as a restored landmark and event venue in the late 20th century.

The house faces Town Hall Square in Riga’s Old Town, centrally placed among the city’s medieval streets and close to other major historic sites such as Riga Cathedral and the medieval city walls.
