The Hottentots Holland Mountains are a mountain range in the Western Cape of South Africa that form part of the Cape Fold Belt. The range is notable for steep slopes, fynbos vegetation and its role as a regional watershed.

Road access across the range is concentrated at Sir Lowry’s Pass on the N2, which provides viewpoints and trailheads for hiking. The slopes and reserves offer a network of trails, lookout points and areas of protected vegetation used for recreation and conservation.

The mountains are part of the geologic Cape Fold Belt created during Paleozoic tectonic events and have long been recognized for their rugged relief and biodiversity value. Over time the range has been used for water catchment, conservation and outdoor recreation.

The range lies east of the Cape Town metropolitan area and separates the Cape Flats and Boland from the Overberg coastal plain, running roughly east-west in the Western Cape province.

  • Ecology and water catchment: The range is part of the Cape Fold Belt and supports extensive fynbos vegetation, making it important for biodiversity and water catchment in the Western Cape.

What to See #

  • Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve: A protected area within the range that includes marked hiking trails and mountain catchments managed for conservation and water supply.
  • Sir Lowry's Pass: Sir Lowry's Pass, the main road crossing on the N2, provides a principal low-altitude route through the range with roadside viewpoints over the lowlands and ocean approaches.
