Hospital de Sant Pau

The complex known as Hospital de Sant Pau is a Modernisme hospital ensemble in Barcelona’s Eixample district, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and built between 1901 and 1930. It is a major example of Catalan modernist architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Commissioned as a purpose-built hospital, it served as a functioning medical complex throughout the 20th century. After hospital services moved to a modern facility, the historic pavilions underwent a major restoration and were converted into a cultural and research complex while preserving the original layout and decorative programme.

The complex sits in Barcelona’s Eixample district, a short walk east of the Sagrada Família basilica and well connected by public transport to central Barcelona.

• Visitor access: Opened to the public after an extensive restoration in the 2010s, with guided tours explaining the architecture and the original hospital functions.
• Heritage status: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for its architectural and urban ensemble and its importance to Catalan Modernisme.

• Administration Pavilion: Located around the centre of the complex, completed administration and reception pavilion with richly decorated façades and interiors designed as the focal point for patient admittance and hospital management.
• Pavilions and underground galleries: A network of pavilions for different medical specialties grouped around landscaped gardens and connected by underground galleries that facilitated patient movement and services.
• Gardens and decorative scheme: The complex includes decorative ceramics, stained glass and mosaics by leading Modernisme craftsmen and retains extensive planted courtyards and axis alignments from the original design.
