Hoşap Castle

Hoşap Castle is a fortified stronghold near the village of Güzelsu in Gürpınar district, Van Province in eastern Turkey. It dates largely to the early modern period and is a well-known regional example of fortress architecture.

The fortress crowns a rocky outcrop above the Hoşap River and features long perimeter walls, multiple towers and a monumental stone gateway. The gateway and ramparts provide clear views across the Hoşap valley and toward the plain that leads to Lake Van approximately 50 km to the east.

The site was constructed and expanded by local rulers of the Mahmudi principality during the early modern era and served as a local administrative and military centre. The castle was occupied and modified across subsequent centuries, leaving a composite of masonry phases from its major building period.

Located beside the modern village of Güzelsu in Gürpınar district, the castle lies roughly 50 km west of the city of Van and is set above a river valley on the eastern edge of the Armenian Highlands.

• Setting: The castle sits immediately above the Hoşap (Güzelsu) River, which shaped the defensive position and approach routes.
• Access: Accessible by road from the nearby village of Güzelsu; much of the exterior can be viewed without entering restricted areas.

What to See #

• Main gate: A monumental stone entrance with decorated masonry and an inscription panel dating to the castle's main building phase; it gives access to the inner bailey and is the most photographed element.
• Inner bailey: A compact inner bailey surrounded by defensive walls and small service buildings where visitors can walk parts of the ramparts and see the arrangement of chambers and galleries.
• Perimeter walls and towers: Long perimeter walls punctuated by towers that enclose the fortress and provide elevated views over the Hoşap valley and surrounding plain.
