How to Get to Hortobágy#
Hortobágy, the national park and pastoral region, is best reached via Debrecen for nearest access or via Budapest for international flights. Onward travel is typically by regional bus or car; public transport to dispersed sites in the park is limited.
Debrecen International Airport (DEB) / Budapest Airport (BUD): Hortobágy (Hajdú-Bihar County) is commonly reached via Debrecen Airport for regional access or Budapest Airport for more international connections. From Debrecen it’s a short drive to Hortobágy (around 30-45 minutes); from Budapest allow roughly 2-2.5 hours by car or a combination of train/bus. Regional shuttle/bus fares are modest (single-digit euros), while taxi/direct transfers cost more.
Sármellék / other regional airports: Some travellers use alternate regional airports depending on routing, but Debrecen and Budapest are the most practical gateways to Hortobágy.
Train: Hungarian State Railways (MÁV-START) connects Debrecen and other regional hubs to the national network; from Debrecen you can continue by bus or taxi to Hortobágy.
