Honshu is the largest and most populous island of Japan, lying at the heart of the Japanese archipelago. It contains the country’s principal cities and political institutions.

The island’s attractions include major metropolitan areas, cultural heritage sites and mountain landscapes. Major urban centers span from the Pacific coast - including a metropolitan region with over 10 million people - to historic cities containing temples, shrines and preserved districts. Iconic natural highlights include a cone-shaped stratovolcano that reaches 3,776 m and large mountain ranges that run through the island’s spine.

Honshu developed as Japan’s political and cultural centre over many centuries, with imperial capitals established there from the classical Heian period (8th-12th centuries) onward. The island’s cities expanded rapidly during the industrialization of the 19th and 20th centuries and today host much of Japan’s industry, government and cultural institutions.

Geographically it sits between the Sea of Japan to the northwest and the Pacific Ocean to the southeast. The island stretches roughly 1,300 km from northeast to southwest and is contiguous with the smaller main islands by bridges and ferry links.

  • Demographic and economic core: The island hosts Japan's largest concentration of population and the country's principal economic and political institutions.
  • High-speed rail: An extensive high-speed rail network links major cities across the island, significantly reducing travel times between Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka.

What to See #

  • Tokyo: Japan's political and economic center with the national capital and largest metropolitan area located on its eastern coast; serves as the hub of multiple high-speed rail lines and international airports.
  • Kyoto: Historic court city and centre of traditional culture, with surviving temples, shrines and former imperial palaces dating mainly from the Heian period onward.
  • Osaka: Major commercial and port city in the Kansai region, forming part of one of Japan's largest urban conurbations alongside Osaka and Kobe.
  • Mount Fuji: Straddles the border of central prefectures and rises to 3,776 m, forming a prominent landmark visible from large parts of the island.
  • Regional divisions: Northern and southern regional zones that include the Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kansai and Chugoku areas, each with distinct climates and cultural patterns.
