The Honghe Hani Rice Terraces are a large, terraced agricultural landscape in Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan province, China, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. They are an extensive example of traditional rice terrace farming shaped by the Hani people over many centuries.

Widely visited viewing points include curved, flooded paddies that produce dramatic reflective patterns at sunrise and sunset; notable clusters are around Duoyishu, Bada and Laohuzui. Walks through nearby Hani villages give close-up views of stone walls, narrow footpaths and small family plots; many terraces are worked by hand and irrigated from higher forested catchments.

The terraces were created and expanded by the Hani people over many generations as a response to steep mountain slopes and limited flat land, forming an integrated system of fields, forests and waterways. Traditional practices of water management, rice cultivation and communal land use have persisted into the present day and underpin the terraces’ continued use.

The terraces sit on steep hillsides in southern Yunnan, mainly within Yuanyang County and neighbouring counties in Honghe Prefecture. The landscape occupies upland valleys and ridges, with villages typically sited at the upper margins of terraced slopes.

  • Best viewing season: Best light for reflective paddies is in late autumn through winter when fields are flooded and reflect the sky, producing mirror-like images favored by photographers.
  • Cultural interaction: Terrace maintenance and irrigation are a living cultural landscape managed by the Hani people, so accessible village trails and local homestays offer opportunities to observe daily farming practices.

What to See #

  • Duoyishu, Bada and Laohuzui viewpoints: A series of named viewpoints, villages and terrace clusters in Yuanyang and neighbouring counties that are commonly visited for photographic views and cultural interaction.
  • Xinjie and Hani villages: Traditional Hani villages such as Xinjie where terraces are directly adjacent to village housing and farming plots.
  • Forest water systems and headwaters: Irrigation and water-management features in upper-forest catchments that supply the terraces via channels and pipes maintained by local communities.
