How to Get to Hồng Ngự#
Hồng Ngự is reached mainly by road from regional hubs; there are no direct passenger rail services. Use Can Tho Airport for the nearest scheduled flights and road transfers, or Tan Son Nhat for international connections followed by a bus or car journey.
Can Tho International Airport (VCA): Can Tho Airport is the nearest commercial airport for much of the upper Mekong Delta; from VCA you can reach Hồng Ngự by road in roughly 1.5-3 hours depending on route and traffic. Taxi or private transfer fares are typically a few hundred thousand VND.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN): For international arrivals, Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City is the main gateway. Overland buses and private cars run from Ho Chi Minh City to Đồng Tháp province; journey times to Hồng Ngự are roughly 4-6 hours and bus fares typically range from VND 150,000-350,000.
Train: There is no direct passenger railway into Hồng Ngự; national rail services terminate in Ho Chi Minh City for the region, so travelers combine rail to HCMC with road transport for the final leg.
Bus: Interprovincial buses and scheduled minibuses are the most common way to reach Hồng Ngự from nearby cities such as Cần Thơ and HCMC. Fares are generally economical (from about VND 100,000 for short regional hops to several hundred thousand for longer routes) and travel times vary by origin and stops.
How to Get Around Hồng Ngự#
Hồng Ngự has no passenger rail service; most visitors arrive by road from Can Tho or Ho Chi Minh City. For short distances inside town use xe ôm or taxis; for intercity travel choose scheduled buses for value or private transfers for speed and comfort.
- Interprovincial bus (VND 80,000-350,000) - Buses link Hồng Ngự with provincial capitals and larger Mekong Delta towns. These are the cheapest option for most travellers; vehicles range from minibuses to larger coaches depending on the operator. Expect frequent departures from larger bus stations.
- Taxi / Private car (VND 300,000-800,000) - Private cars and taxis are convenient for door-to-door travel, especially from airports or when carrying luggage. They are faster than shared buses but substantially more expensive; always agree a price for long-distance trips or ask for the meter.
- Motorbike taxi (Xe ôm) (VND 10,000-150,000) - Xe ôm remain the fastest and cheapest way to negotiate short distances, reach bus stations or move around market areas. For inter-town travel you can also find hired motorbike drivers for longer rides - confirm price first.
- Grab / Ride-hailing (VND 50,000-400,000) - Grab operates in larger Delta cities and may be available for legs near Cần Thơ or other hubs; coverage in Hồng Ngự itself may be limited. Use ride-hailing when available for predictable fares and cashless payments.
- Bicycle / Motorbike rental (VND 100,000-200,000/day) - Renting a motorbike is a common way to explore the surrounding rural areas and markets at your own pace. Roads can be narrow and traffic rules are different - ride defensively and carry your license and insurance documents.
- Walking - The town centre and waterfront markets are compact and easy to explore on foot. Walking is the best way to soak up the local atmosphere and visit floating/river markets if accessible.
