How to Get to Hoedspruit
Hoedspruit is primarily an air-access destination for safaris; Hoedspruit Airport (HDS) handles many domestic flights and charters. Overland arrivals from Nelspruit/Polokwane are possible but take longer; most visitors use lodge transfers or hire cars.
Hoedspruit Airport (HDS): Hoedspruit has a local airport (Hoedspruit East or HDS) with scheduled domestic flights and many safari-charter arrivals. From the airport it’s a short drive (10-25 minutes) into town or the nearby lodges, often provided by hotel shuttles (transfers typically included or arranged; short taxi rides cost roughly ZAR 80-200).
Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP): MQP (Nelspruit) is another option for international/domestic connections; it’s farther away (approx. 1.5-2.5 hours drive) and many visitors prefer flying into HDS for direct access to the Hoedspruit/safari area.
Train: There is no practical passenger rail service to Hoedspruit for tourists; rail freight exists in parts of Limpopo but not useful for visitors.
Bus / shuttle: Long-distance bus companies and private shuttle operators run services from larger centres (e.g., Polokwane, Nelspruit) to Hoedspruit. Many lodges provide scheduled transfers from HDS or from regional airports; arrange transfers with accommodation for the simplest onward travel.
