How to Get to Hitachi
Hitachi (Hitachi-shi) is on the Pacific coast of Ibaraki Prefecture and is served by the JR Jōban Line at Hitachi Station. The nearest airports are Ibaraki Airport (IBR) for domestic/short international flights and the larger international hubs Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND) for more flight options.
Ibaraki Airport (IBR): Ibaraki Airport is the closest commercial airport to Hitachi (about 50-70 km south-west). From the terminal you can take an airport limousine bus to Mito Station (around 45-55 minutes, roughly ¥1,050); from Mito catch the JR Jōban Line rapid to Hitachi Station (about 30-40 minutes, ¥600-¥1,000). Rental cars are also available at the airport; driving to Hitachi takes roughly 50-70 minutes depending on traffic.
Narita International Airport (NRT): Narita is the biggest gateway for international travellers. A convenient option is the Narita Express (N’EX) or an airport shuttle into central Tokyo (Narita Express to Tokyo/Ueno ~50-60 minutes, about ¥3,000-¥3,200), then transfer to the JR Jōban Line limited express (Tokiwa) from Ueno to Hitachi (about 1 hour 30-50 minutes, limited-express fare and surcharge ≈ ¥3,000-¥4,000). Alternatively, long-distance highway buses and rental cars from Narita can reach Hitachi in about 2-2.5 hours depending on route and traffic.
Train: Hitachi is served by Hitachi Station (日立駅) on the JR Jōban Line. From Ueno Station take the JR Jōban Line limited-express (Tokiwa) to Hitachi (journey about 1 hour 30-50 minutes; combined base fare + limited-express surcharge typically in the ¥3,000-¥4,000 range). There are also local and rapid JR services from Mito (about 30-40 minutes, ¥600-¥1,000) and from stations further north on the Jōban Line.
Bus: Regional highway and local buses connect Hitachi with Mito, Tokai and Tokyo-area terminals. Highway buses from central Tokyo to Ibaraki destinations commonly take 2-3 hours with fares typically ¥2,000-¥3,000 depending on the route; local municipal buses around Hitachi cost roughly ¥200-¥500 per ride. Timetables vary by season, so check operators’ sites for current schedules.
How to Get Around Hitachi
Hitachi is easiest to navigate by train for intercity travel and a combination of local buses, taxis or rental car for off-station destinations. For most visitors, using the JR Jōban Line to base yourself at Hitachi Station, then walking, cycling or taking short bus/taxi rides for nearby sights works best.
- Train (JR Jōban Line) (¥600-¥4,000) - The Jōban Line is the most reliable way to reach and move around Hitachi - Hitachi Station is the city's main rail hub. Limited-express 'Tokiwa' services from Ueno provide the fastest connection to Tokyo; local and rapid trains connect to nearby towns such as Mito. Buy reserved seats for limited-express services during holiday periods and use a JR ticket machine or JR-EAST online booking for reservations.
- Local buses (¥200-¥500) - Local municipal and community buses serve residential areas, coastal sites and industrial zones not close to the station. Fares are generally low (single rides typically ¥200-¥500). Timetable frequency can be sparse outside peak hours, so plan connections carefully and have exact change or an IC card ready where accepted.
- Highway / Intercity buses (¥2,000-¥3,000) - Highway buses link Hitachi area terminals with Tokyo and other Ibaraki cities; they are a cost-effective alternative to trains for some routes and luggage. Trips to Tokyo take roughly 2-3 hours depending on traffic and cost around ¥2,000-¥3,000. Book in advance for weekends and holidays to secure a seat.
- Taxi (¥400-¥3,000) - Taxis are convenient for short hops, luggage or travel late at night when buses and trains are limited. Expect an initial meter fare of around ¥400-¥700 and typical short trips inside town to cost ¥1,000-¥3,000. Drivers rarely speak English, so having your destination written in Japanese helps.
- Rental car (¥5,000-¥10,000/day) - A rental car is useful if you plan to explore coastal sights, countryside or industrial-heritage sites with limited public transport. Rental rates vary by operator but expect daily rates from about ¥5,000-¥10,000 plus fuel and expressway tolls. Parking is widely available but check for fees at tourist sites.
- Bicycle (¥300-¥1,500/day) - Cycling is pleasant for short local trips along the coast and through quieter neighbourhoods. Some hotels and community centres offer bike rental by the hour or day (typically a few hundred yen per hour or ¥500-¥1,500/day). Watch for industrial traffic on certain roads and use designated bike lanes where provided.
- Walking - Hitachi is walkable around the station area and coastal promenades; walking is often the fastest way to explore downtown shops, waterfront parks and local shrines. Expect 10-30 minute walks between major points in central Hitachi.
