How to Get to Hitachi-Naka#

Hitachinaka (Hitachi‑Naka) is a coastal city in Ibaraki Prefecture best reached by rail from Mito or Tokyo; the nearest stations are Katsuta (JR Joban Line) and the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway’s Minato Line. For international travellers the main access points are Narita International Airport and the closer Ibaraki (Hyakuri) Airport - expect at least one transfer by train or bus to reach the city centre.

By Air

Ibaraki Airport (IBR): Ibaraki (Hyakuri) Airport is the closest airport to Hitachinaka and has domestic flights and a few international routes. There are scheduled airport buses to Mito Station (about ¥1,070, ~45-60 min); from Mito take the JR Joban Line to Katsuta Station (see Train card) or a taxi to central Hitachinaka (taxi ~¥6,000-¥8,000, ~40-60 min).

Narita International Airport (NRT): Narita is the main international gateway for the region. From Narita you can take the Keisei Skyliner to Keisei-Ueno (¥2,520, ~36 min) or the JR Narita Express to Tokyo Station (¥3,020, ~53 min) and then transfer onto the JR Joban Line / limited-express services toward Katsuta Station (total transfer time to Hitachinaka typically 1.5-2.5 hours depending on connections). Taxis from Narita to Hitachinaka are possible but expensive (generally ¥20,000+ and ~1.5-2 hours).

By Train & Bus

Train: The main rail access is via JR East’s Joban Line - the nearest major station for Hitachinaka is Katsuta Station (JR Joban Line), which is served by local and limited-express services from Tokyo/Mito. Inside the city the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway (Minato Line) runs between Katsuta and Ajigaura (useful for seaside areas). Expect local JR fares within Ibaraki to be modest (one-way short trips typically a few hundred yen).

Bus: Local and regional buses (operators include Ibaraki Kotsu and Kantetsu services) connect Katsuta, Mito and coastal spots; single fares in-city are usually ¥200-¥500 depending on distance. From Ibaraki Airport there are scheduled airport buses to Mito (see By Air) and onward bus connections from Mito/Katsuta to surrounding towns; check timetables as frequencies can be limited outside peak hours.

How to Get Around Hitachi-Naka#

Hitachinaka is easiest to navigate by train and on foot: use JR Joban Line services to Katsuta Station and the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway for coastal stops, then walk or take short bus/taxi hops. For most visitors a combination of JR + local buses (or a taxi for off‑timetable connections) works best; bring an IC card (Suica/PASMO) for smoother transfers.

  • JR Joban Line (¥200-¥2,500) - The JR Joban Line is the main rail artery serving Hitachinaka via Katsuta Station. Limited‑express services from Tokyo/Ueno/Mito are the fastest option; local trains are frequent for short hops. Use JR East timetables for limited‑express reservations during busy seasons and buy tickets at the station or via JR East apps.
  • Hitachinaka Seaside Railway (Minato Line) (¥150-¥330) - A small third‑sector line that runs between Katsuta and Ajigaura, handy for reaching the seaside and local attractions. Trains are infrequent compared with JR, so check the timetable; rides are short and cheap. This line is essential if you plan to visit the coast or the Hitachinaka seaside parks.
  • Local & Regional Buses (¥200-¥800) - Buses by operators such as Ibaraki Kotsu and Kantetsu connect neighbourhoods, coastal stops and links to Mito and the airport. Useful for places not served by rail but services can be sparse on weekends and evenings. Have exact change or an IC card (Suica/PASMO) for convenience; expect fares typically under ¥500 for in‑city rides.
  • Taxi (¥700-¥8,000) - Taxis are reliable for door‑to‑door travel around Hitachinaka and for late‑night trips when trains/buses stop. Short inner‑city fares are modest but airport transfers are costly; expect 10-20 minute urban rides to cost a few hundred to a few thousand yen. If travelling with luggage, a taxi from Mito or the airport can be more convenient despite the price.
  • Bicycle & Rentals (¥500-¥1,200/day) - Hitachinaka is reasonably flat in many areas and bike rentals (where available) are a pleasant way to explore the coast and parks. Daily rental rates are typically modest and parking is widely available around tourist spots. Use caution on busier roads and avoid cycling on narrow footpaths.
  • Walking - The city centre around Katsuta and coastal promenades are compact and pleasant to explore on foot; walking is the best way to discover local shops, parks and seaside views. Wear comfortable shoes during summer - shade can be limited along the seafront.
