The Historical Monuments at Makli, Thatta is a vast funerary complex near Thatta in Sindh, Pakistan, containing tombs and funerary monuments dating mainly from the 14th to the 18th centuries. The site is one of the largest historic necropolises in South Asia.
The complex comprises numerous elaborately carved stone and brick tombs, domed mausolea and funerary monuments that display a mix of regional architectural forms and decorative traditions. Many monuments feature stone carving, tilework and sculptural detail and are grouped in clusters across the hill and plain.
The necropolis developed over several centuries as local rulers, dynasties and elites established funerary monuments at Makli; construction and decoration reflect changing styles and patronage through the medieval and early modern periods. Conservation challenges have included weathering and salt damage to carved stone and tile surfaces.
Makli lies on the coastal plain of lower Sindh, close to the historic city of Thatta, within the Indus delta region of southern Pakistan. The cemetery occupies an extensive area on a low ridge and adjacent plain.
