The Historic Centre (Old Town) of Tallinn is a well-preserved medieval city core in the northern part of Tallinn, Estonia, notable for its extensive surviving Gothic and Hanseatic architecture and defensive systems. It contains structures and fabric largely dating from the 13th to 16th centuries and is a leading example of a medieval Northern European port town.
The area includes a compact lower town and the higher Toompea district divided by a steep slope. Highlights include a market square bordered by merchant houses, a Gothic town hall completed in 1404, and a network of narrow cobbled streets. There are extensive surviving medieval defensive walls with multiple towers offering short walking routes and viewpoints.
The Old Town developed under Hanseatic influence from the 13th century and grew as Tallinn became a regional trading port. Toompea has served as a fortified administrative centre since medieval times; buildings and fortifications were adapted over centuries for military and civic use.
The historic centre occupies central Tallinn on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland. It is the core of the modern city and sits within short walking distance of Tallinn’s port and main transport hubs.
- Viewing points: Good views are available from the Toompea hill terraces and from the stairways near the Town Hall; early morning or late afternoon light is best for photography.
- Layout and access: The Old Town preserves an extensive medieval street plan with many narrow cobbled streets and small courtyards, making some areas inaccessible to vehicles.
