Historic Centre of Naples preserves an extensive urban core with medieval, Renaissance and Baroque layers centred on narrow streets, churches and palaces. The area is noted for its concentration of historic religious buildings and urban fabric that developed over many centuries.

Prominent elements include the long east-west thoroughfare known as Spaccanapoli, the Duomo with the cult of San Gennaro, and the royal and civic fortifications near the waterfront. Museums and cloisters within the centre also hold important archaeological and art collections.

Naples developed continuously from antiquity through the medieval and early modern periods, expanding under various rulers including Norman, Angevin and Spanish kings, which produced the present mix of styles. Urban growth in the 17th and 18th centuries added many Baroque churches and palaces.

The historic centre occupies the central districts of the modern city of Naples on the northern shore of the Bay of Naples in the Campania region, with Mount Vesuvius and the bay forming the surrounding landscape.

What to See#

• Spaccanapoli: A narrow medieval street that cuts the historic centre and links many churches, palaces and public spaces along a straight line.
• Naples Cathedral (Duomo): The city’s cathedral complex housing the relics and cult of the patron saint San Gennaro and rebuilt over several centuries.
• Castel Nuovo and waterfront fortifications: A medieval royal castle and later fortifications sited near the waterfront, which played roles in the city’s defensive and civic life.

• Arrive at Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi); the historic centre (Spaccanapoli, Duomo area) is about a 10-15 minute walk from the station. Naples Metro Line 1 stops at Dante and Municipio, both within short walking distance of the old town and waterfront.

• By car from Rome the drive is south on the A1 Autostrada, roughly 225 km (around 2.5-3 hours depending on traffic).

• Walk Spaccanapoli early in the morning to experience the medieval grid before tour groups arrive and to visit the Duomo and other churches with shorter waits.
• If you want to see the Cappella Sansevero (which often has long queues), reserve tickets in advance or visit first thing after opening to avoid the biggest crowds.
• Go beyond the main arteries into the narrow side streets to find artisan nativity‑workshops (via San Gregorio Armeno) and everyday Neapolitan life that many tourists miss while staying at the main squares.
