Historic Centre of Morelia

Historic Centre of Morelia is the well-preserved colonial core of the city of Morelia in Michoacán, notable for its Baroque architecture and regular Spanish grid layout established in the 16th century. The centre retains many monumental religious and civic buildings set around formal plazas.

Key attractions include the Morelia Cathedral with its twin towers, broad plazas and long, straight avenues that demonstrate the original urban plan. The ensemble is compact and can be explored on foot between plazas, churches and government buildings.

The city was founded in the mid-16th century as a Spanish colonial settlement and developed through the 17th and 18th centuries with extensive ecclesiastical and civic construction. It was renamed Morelia in the 19th century in honour of independence leader José María Morelos.

The historic centre sits in the heart of the modern city of Morelia in Michoacán, surrounded by highland countryside and accessible from regional road connections.
