Historic Centre of Macao
Historical Site Blend of Portuguese and Chinese architecture and temples
Macao’s Historic Centre preserves Portuguese colonial buildings like the Ruins of St. Paul’s and Senado Square alongside Chinese temples. Travelers visit for layered architecture, Macanese cuisine and the contrast between heritage streets and nearby entertainment districts.
Historic Centre of Macao is a compact ensemble of historic buildings, public squares and temples on the Macao Peninsula that documents 400 years of Portuguese-Chinese interaction. The site preserves elements from the 16th to the 20th century and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its cultural fusion.
The area includes prominent landmarks such as the ruins of a 17th-century Jesuit church façade, the civic Senado Square, traditional Chinese temples and colonial plazas. Streets and small museums make the centre walkable and most points of interest are within short walking distances of each other.
Portuguese traders established a permanent presence in Macao in the mid-16th century and built churches, administrative buildings and fortifications alongside older Chinese temples. Over subsequent centuries the centre expanded and adapted, preserving layered architectural styles from Baroque façades to Chinese religious structures.
The historic centre sits on the Macao Peninsula in the Pearl River Delta, opposite the Chinese mainland and a short ferry crossing from Hong Kong. It occupies the older, urban core of the Special Administrative Region of Macao.

- Senado Square: A paved civic square framed by pastel colonial buildings and boutiques that acts as the social and ceremonial heart of the historic centre.
- A-Ma Temple: A 16th-century temple dedicated to the sea goddess that predates Portuguese settlement and shows traditional Chinese temple architecture.
- Guia Fortress and Chapel: A hilltop fortification and lighthouse complex with religious and military structures offering panoramic views over Macao Peninsula.

Tips for Visiting Historic Centre of Macao #

- Don't skip Guia Fortress and Lighthouse for one of the best panoramic views over Macao's historic core and harbour; it's a short detour from the central district and far less crowded than the Ruins at peak times.
- Visit in the evening to see Senado Square and the ruined façade of St. Paul's lit up-the atmosphere after dark is very different from the daytime crowds and many visitors miss the city's illuminated colonial streets.
