Hisar Range
Mountains Mountain range in western Tajikistan, part of Pamirs
A low mountain range west of Dushanbe, the Hisar Range has hiking paths, shepherded valleys and historical sites like the nearby Hissar Fortress that draw day-trippers.
The Hisar Range is a mountain chain in western Tajikistan that forms part of the larger Pamir-Alai mountain system. The range runs roughly east-west and includes steep ridges and high peaks that separate river valleys and provide watersheds for surrounding lowlands.
Locally the range provides summer pasture, routes for local travel, and opportunities for hiking and mountaineering; it also influences the climate and hydrology of adjacent lowland areas. Several of its peaks rise above 4,000 meters and some valleys contain seasonal snowfields and small glaciers.
Geographically the Hisar Range lies to the north and west of the Dushanbe region and connects with adjacent ranges within Tajikistan’s highland topography.
- Local significance: The range forms a prominent mountainous barrier west and north of Dushanbe and contains many ridges and valleys used for local grazing and mountaineering.
- Altitude: Peaks in the range commonly exceed 4,000 meters, with numerous glaciated and snowbound summits above that level in places.
