Hippo Regius

Hippo Regius is the site of an ancient city and Roman colony near modern Annaba in northeastern Algeria, notable as an important urban centre in Roman North Africa. It is historically significant as the episcopal seat of Saint Augustine.

The archaeological area contains visible remains of the Roman city including foundations, street fragments and traces of public and religious buildings that document urban life under Roman and late-antique rule. The site is frequented by those interested in Roman North Africa and early Christian history.

Hippo Regius was an established port and administrative centre in antiquity that passed through Punic, Numidian, Roman and Vandal phases. It became the bishopric where Saint Augustine served until his death in 430 AD and later experienced changes under subsequent powers.

The ruins lie close to the modern city of Annaba on Algeria’s northeastern Mediterranean coast, occupying a coastal plain area with access to regional transport routes.
