Hindu Kush

The Hindu Kush is a major mountain range of Central and South Asia that stretches across eastern and central Afghanistan into northern Pakistan. The range forms a high, rugged barrier of peaks and passes that has long influenced climate, trade routes and human settlement patterns.

Peaks in the Hindu Kush exceed 6,000 metres in many places, with the range’s highest summit - Tirich Mir - rising to 7,708 metres in the northern Pakistani sector. The terrain includes glaciated highlands, deep valleys and strategic mountain passes such as the Salang Pass.

Historically the Hindu Kush has been a corridor and barrier for migrating peoples, trade caravans and military campaigns linking Central Asia with the Indian subcontinent. It remains sparsely populated in many high areas, with pastoralism and seasonal transhumance common in the valleys.

The range extends across multiple provinces in Afghanistan and into Pakistan, forming a key physiographic spine of the region and influencing weather patterns across surrounding lowlands.
