Hindu Kush
Mountains Mountain range spanning Afghanistan and northern Pakistan
The Hindu Kush mountain chain crosses Afghanistan and Pakistan, offering high passes, alpine valleys and routes used historically for trade. Trekking and mountaineering draw visitors where security allows.
The Hindu Kush is a major mountain range of Central and South Asia that stretches across eastern and central Afghanistan into northern Pakistan. The range forms a high, rugged barrier of peaks and passes that has long influenced climate, trade routes and human settlement patterns.
Peaks in the Hindu Kush exceed 6,000 metres in many places, with the range’s highest summit - Tirich Mir - rising to 7,708 metres in the northern Pakistani sector. The terrain includes glaciated highlands, deep valleys and strategic mountain passes such as the Salang Pass.
Historically the Hindu Kush has been a corridor and barrier for migrating peoples, trade caravans and military campaigns linking Central Asia with the Indian subcontinent. It remains sparsely populated in many high areas, with pastoralism and seasonal transhumance common in the valleys.
The range extends across multiple provinces in Afghanistan and into Pakistan, forming a key physiographic spine of the region and influencing weather patterns across surrounding lowlands.
- Regional significance: The Hindu Kush is the main mountain chain separating the high plateaus of central Afghanistan from the Indus basin, with numerous peaks above 6,000 metres and several passes used historically for trade and military movement.
What to See #
- Salang Pass: Salang Pass - a major high-altitude road pass and tunnel through the Hindu Kush that connects northern and southern Afghanistan, reaching over 3,300 metres elevation.
- Tirich Mir: Tirich Mir - the highest peak associated with the broader Hindu Kush range, rising to 7,708 metres in northern Pakistan and often cited as the range's highest summit.
How to Get to Hindu Kush #
The Hindu Kush is a broad mountain range; the nearest major urban access point within Afghanistan is Kabul. One common road route into the central Hindu Kush region is north from Kabul through the Salang Pass/Tunnel on the main highway across the mountains; other approaches exist from provincial towns such as Bamiyan and Mazar‑i‑Sharif depending on which portion of the range you intend to reach.
Access into specific valleys or peaks typically requires local roads, long drives and then hiking or mountaineering approaches from regional towns.
Tips for Visiting Hindu Kush #
- If you are planning trekking or mountaineering in the Hindu Kush, aim for the summer months (roughly June-September) when high‑altitude passes are most likely to be open and weather is more stable.
- Use established routes and hire experienced local high‑altitude guides with good knowledge of acclimatization; many of the range's valleys are remote and require careful logistic planning.
