Himayat Sagar
Lake Artificial reservoir supplying water to Hyderabad
Himayat Sagar is a reservoir west of Hyderabad created for water supply and local recreation. Visitors and residents use the shoreline for birdwatching, picnics and evening walks while noting its role in the city’s water history.
Himayat Sagar is an artificial reservoir on the outskirts of Hyderabad in Telangana, India, created in the early 20th century as a municipal water supply and flood-control measure. It is one of two major reservoirs built after the 1908 Musi floods to secure the city’s water needs and reduce flood risk.
The lake is valued for its broad water surface and shoreline; open-water areas and reed-lined margins attract local anglers and birdwatchers. Several short roads and paths run along the reservoir bund and give accessible views across the water for about 1-2 kilometers of shoreline.
The reservoir was constructed by the Hyderabad state administration under the Nizam as part of post-flood infrastructure projects in the early 1900s. It has since remained an important local water source while the surrounding area has urbanized.
Himayat Sagar lies southwest of central Hyderabad in Telangana, within the greater Hyderabad metropolitan area. The setting is semi-urban with a mix of built-up suburbs and open water and farmland around the reservoir.
- Birdwatching: Winter months often bring migrating waterfowl and other birds, making the reservoir a local birdwatching spot.
- Best viewing time: Late afternoon and sunset provide the most scenic views across the water and along the bund.
