The High Atlas is the principal mountain chain running across central Morocco and contains the country’s highest summits, including North Africa’s tallest peak. It forms a major climatic and geographic barrier between the Atlantic/Mediterranean coastal plains and the Sahara fringe.

The range offers high-mountain trekking, multi-day routes and mountain villages clustered on valley floors; Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m) is the most visited summit and a common multi-day objective. Roads and passes provide access from Marrakech and other cities, and valleys such as Imlil serve as bases for guided climbs and local hospitality.

The High Atlas has been home to Berber-speaking communities for centuries and has long supported pastoralism, terraced agriculture and trade routes crossing the mountains. Over the 20th and 21st centuries the area has developed mountaineering and trekking infrastructure catering to international visitors.

The core High Atlas runs roughly east-west south of Marrakech through central-southern Morocco, forming the highest section of the Atlas system and separating the coastal plains from interior plateaus.

  • Best time to visit: Spring through early autumn is the main trekking season; winter brings heavy snow at higher elevations and alpine conditions on the main peaks.

What to See #

  • Jebel Toubkal: Mount Toubkal is the High Atlas's highest peak at 4,167 metres and is the focal point for many multi-day treks and climbs originating from mountain villages such as Imlil.
  • Imlil valley: A valley village and base for treks into the High Atlas, serving as the usual start point for ascents of Toubkal and nearby ridges; it provides lodging, mule support and marked trails.
  • Tizi n'Tichka pass: A main high mountain road crossing the range to the south-east of Marrakesh that provides access between the plains and the central High Atlas region.

How to Get to High Atlas #

The High Atlas is a broad mountain chain with multiple access points; southern approaches are commonly reached from Marrakech and central sections from cities like Beni Mellal. From Marrakech take the N9 over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to reach southern High Atlas valleys and mountain towns (the distance and time depend on which valley you’re heading for). Buses and grand taxis operate from Marrakech to towns on the mountain roads; for central High Atlas areas use regional roads out of Beni Mellal and local transport into valley villages. For trekking and specific passes it’s usual to travel to the nearest valley town by car or bus and then continue on foot or with local guides.

Tips for Visiting High Atlas #

  • Best time: travel in spring or autumn to avoid summer heat in the valleys and to enjoy comfortable hiking conditions and clearer mountain passes such as the Tizi n'Tichka.
  • Which entrance/gateway: Marrakech is the main gateway for southern High Atlas routes (Tizi n'Tichka road leads toward Ouarzazate), while Imlil and the Ourika/Aït Bouguemez valleys serve as gateways for central Toubkal-area hikes.
  • What most people miss: remote Berber valleys, kasbahs and village trails away from the main passes-plan a multi‑day route or use local guides to reach these quieter areas rather than sticking to the busiest passes.
  • Avoiding crowds: avoid popular single-day routes out of Marrakech on weekends; instead head into lesser-known valleys (for example Aït Bouguemez or the upper Ourika) or start very early to beat the day‑tour traffic.
