Hierakonpolis (ancient Nekhen) is a major predynastic and early dynastic archaeological site in Upper Egypt, in the modern Aswan Governorate. It was one of the most important centers of power and ritual in southern Egypt during the 4th millennium BCE.
Excavated areas reveal settlement mounds, large cemeteries and ritual deposits that document early state formation and long-distance craft production in predynastic Egypt. Finds include monumental tombs, decorated pottery and other artifacts that illustrate complex social and religious practices well before the pharaonic state fully formed.
Occupied from the late Neolithic into the Early Dynastic period, Hierakonpolis served as a regional political and religious center and was an important cult center for the falcon god associated with early kingship. Archaeological fieldwork at the site began in the late 19th and 20th centuries and continues in phases under Egyptian and international teams.
Located on the west bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt within Aswan Governorate, the site lies inland from the modern Nile corridor between the better-known temple towns of Edfu and Kom Ombo.
