Hermopolis
Administrative Seat Ancient Egyptian city dedicated to the god Thoth
An archaeological site in Minya Governorate, Hermopolis contains remains from Greco‑Roman and Pharaonic periods and draws specialists and visitors interested in ancient Egyptian history.
Hermopolis (ancient Khemenu, often called Hermopolis Magna) is an archaeological site in Minya Governorate that was an important cult center for the god Thoth in ancient Egypt. The visible remains date mainly to Ptolemaic and Roman periods.
Visitors encounter the foundations and fragmentary ruins of temple precincts, stone columns and sections of Roman-era construction, illustrating the site’s long occupation and later Hellenistic and Roman phases. Surface remains and some visible masonry outline sacred and administrative areas.
The city developed as an administrative and religious center in pharaonic times and became prominent under Ptolemaic and Roman rule when temples and civic buildings were rebuilt or enlarged. Over centuries the site fell into decline and its masonry has been reused elsewhere.
The site is located in Upper Egypt’s Minya Governorate, on the Nile Valley plain approximately in the middle stretch of the country, within a region dense with ancient archaeological sites.
