Hengduan Shan refers to a complex of mountain ranges on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau in southwest China, notable for steep relief and major river gorges. The system extends roughly north-south for several hundred to about a thousand kilometres and forms key watershed divides.

The area contains high peaks, deep valleys and long north-south-oriented ridgelines that separate the Yangtze, Mekong and Salween river systems. Elevation changes over short horizontal distances create varied climate zones and high levels of plant and animal endemism.

The ranges are the product of active tectonics related to the India-Asia collision, with ongoing uplift and frequent seismicity shaping the landscape. Human presence varies from lowland towns and agricultural terraces to remote highland pastures and forested slopes.

Geographically the Hengduan region spans parts of western Sichuan, northwestern Yunnan and eastern Tibet Autonomous Region, forming a transition between the high Tibetan Plateau and lower river valleys to the east.

  • River divides: The ranges form a major east-edge complex of the Tibetan Plateau and separate the drainages of the Yangtze, Mekong and Salween rivers.
  • Biodiversity: Recognised as a biodiversity hotspot with steep elevation gradients and many endemic plant and animal species.

What to See #

  • Gaoligong and neighbouring ranges: A north-south chain of ranges including heavily forested flanks, deep river gorges and high alpine peaks important for endemism and biodiversity.
  • Daxue and adjacent subranges: High eastern edge ranges with peaks and glaciated summits, forming part of the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau and feeding major rivers.

How to Get to Hengduan Shan #

Hengduan Shan is a large mountain system spanning western Sichuan and northwestern Yunnan; access is via regional transport hubs. Typical approaches are to fly or take rail to major cities such as Chengdu or Kunming and then drive on provincial highways to mountain towns (for example Lijiang, Shangri‑La/Zhongdian or Deqin) that serve as trailheads for Hengduan subranges; final access is by local roads and mountain tracks.

Tips for Visiting Hengduan Shan #

  • The Hengduan Shan is a huge, rugged mountain system spanning parts of Yunnan and adjacent provinces; focus on a specific valley or national park when planning and allow extra days for overland travel between access points.
  • Travel in spring or autumn for the most stable weather and clearer mountain views; many high routes are snowbound in winter and monsoon rains make lower roads muddy and landslide-prone in summer.
  • Some areas lie within Tibetan cultural zones or near sensitive borders-check permit requirements and local entry restrictions, and work with reputable local guides for remote treks.

Best Time to Visit Hengduan Shan #

Visit in late spring (May-June) or autumn (September-October) for the most stable weather and best visibility; conditions vary greatly with elevation so plan by route and altitude.

Late spring (good for trekking at lower elevations)
May-June · Valleys ~10-20°C; high elevations much colder
Relatively stable weather and flowering seasons in many valleys-conditions vary strongly with elevation.
Autumn (clearer skies, excellent views)
September-October · Valleys ~10-20°C; high elevations much colder
Often the most stable weather window for clear mountain views and overland travel; higher passes can already be cold.
Winter (high elevations cold)
November-March · High passes often below freezing; valleys cold to mild
Snow and cold at higher elevations limit access-travel depends heavily on route and elevation.
