Helsinki Railway Square (Rautatientori) is a central public square in Helsinki immediately outside Helsinki Central Station. It functions as one of the city’s primary transport and pedestrian hubs.

The square sits beside major transit connections - the main railway station and nearby metro entrance - and is surrounded by shops, cafes and cultural institutions. It is a common meeting point and the starting place for many walking routes into the city centre and to nearby museum and shopping streets.

The square developed alongside Helsinki’s rail infrastructure in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the railway and station became the city’s transport focus. Its appearance and use have evolved with urban redevelopment and the growth of public transport.

Located in the heart of Helsinki, the square adjoins the central railway station and lies within walking distance of key downtown streets and cultural sites. It is in the municipality of Helsinki and serves as a central node for the city’s public transport network.

Rautatientori sits in central Helsinki beside the main station (Helsinki Central). From Helsinki-Vantaa Airport take the train (I or P lines) to Helsinki Central Station (about 30-40 minutes). Tram lines 2 and 9 stop directly at Rautatientori; many buses terminate at the nearby bus station. The square is a short walk from the Market Square and Esplanadi.

• Head to the square before 9am on weekdays to watch delivery trucks, office workers and tram drivers sketch the city's rhythm - it's when Helsinki feels least performative.
• Stand on the eastern steps of the Railway Station to photograph the clocktower framed by the station's famous granite lanterns; the best light is late afternoon.
• If arriving by tram, use lines 2 or 9; step off at the Rautatientori stop to avoid the crowded station concourse.
