Heliopolis (ancient Egypt)
Archaeological Site Ancient sun-worship city and major cult center
Once a major center of sun worship near present-day Cairo, ancient Heliopolis is visited for its historical role in pharaonic religion and scattered archaeological remains displayed in museums.
Heliopolis in ancient Egypt was a major religious centre dedicated to sun worship, located on the northeastern edge of the Nile floodplain in what is now the northeastern suburbs of Cairo.
Known in antiquity for its temple to the sun god and as a center of theological learning, the site today has few large standing monuments but contributed prominently to Egyptian cosmology and royal ideology. Modern development has absorbed much of the ancient city, leaving scattered archaeological remains.
Heliopolis was an important cultic and cultural city from the Early Dynastic through the Pharaonic periods and continued to be known in the Greco-Roman era; its institutions and priesthood were influential in religious matters. Over centuries most temple structures were dismantled and reused, and archaeological finds are mainly fragments and relocated monuments.
The ancient site lies within the general area of the modern Cairo district called Heliopolis, northeast of central Cairo and now part of Greater Cairo’s urban fabric.
