Helike
Archaeological Site Ancient Greek city submerged after classical-era earthquake
Helike marks the site of an ancient Greek city that sank in the 4th century BCE; visitors come for archaeological excavations, local museums and the nearby Gulf of Corinth coast.
Helike was an ancient Greek city in Achaea on the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth that was destroyed and submerged following an earthquake and accompanying sea disturbance in 373 BCE. Its disappearance became a subject of classical accounts and long-standing historical interest.
Archaeological investigations and survey work in the coastal plain near the modern village of Elliki have identified buried and waterlogged remains consistent with a submerged settlement and harbor deposits. Finds have helped to match the archaeological evidence with ancient descriptions of the city and its abrupt end.
Ancient Helike functioned as a Greek city-state until its destruction in 373 BCE, after which the site was abandoned and became associated with legend. Interest in locating the city’s remains prompted recurrent archaeological campaigns from the late 19th century and especially in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The site lies on the northern coast of the Gulf of Corinth in Western Greece, close to the modern town of Aigio and the village known today as Elliki, in a low-lying coastal plain where ancient harbor features have been investigated.
- Catastrophic sinking: The city's sudden destruction in 373 BCE by earthquake and tsunami was recorded by ancient authors and made Helike a topic of historical and archaeological interest.
How to Get to Helike #
Helike is on the Gulf of Corinth, near the modern village of Elliniko in Achaea. From Patras, drive east along the coast (about 40-60 minutes), following regional roads; public transport options are limited, so a car or organized tour is the most reliable approach.
Tips for Visiting Helike #
- Visit the archaeological remains in the morning to avoid heat and to benefit from quieter conditions.
- Bring a local guide if possible - they can explain the modern attempts to locate the classical city under marshy silt and tell local legends about the earthquake.
- Wear shoes that can handle uneven ground; some sections are eroded and muddy after rain.
Best Time to Visit Helike #
Spring and early autumn are best for visiting the low-lying archaeological landscapes and for avoiding intense summer heat.
