Hegra, also known as Madâin Sâlih, is a large Nabataean archaeological site in northwestern Saudi Arabia’s Al-‘Ula region, noted for its rock-cut tombs and inscriptions. It is the best-preserved large Nabataean site after Petra and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The site contains a wide array of monumental tomb facades carved into sandstone outcrops, as well as evidence of ancient settlement and trade-route activity. One of the most famous single monuments is Qasr al-Farid, a freestanding carved tomb with an unfinished interior.

Hegra dates to the Nabataean period from the 1st century BCE into the early centuries CE and served as a regional centre on caravan routes. It lies in the Al-‘Ula area of Medina Province in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

  • Number of tombs: Contains 131 monumental rock-cut tombs with elaborately carved facades; these tombs are a primary reason for the site's UNESCO World Heritage inscription.
  • Nabataean significance: Also known as Madâin Sâlih, it was the southernmost major city of the Nabataean kingdom and is often described as the kingdom's second urban centre after Petra.

What to See #

  • Qasr al-Farid: Qasr al-Farid, the single freestanding monumental tomb cut from a single rock block and notable for its uncompleted interior.
  • Tomb facades and inscriptions: The cluster of monumental rock-cut tomb facades with Nabatean architectural motifs and inscriptions that face an open plateau.
  • Ancient settlement area: Remains of an associated ancient settlement and trade-route installations that supported the site's role as a Nabatean trading outpost.
