Haryana Travel Guide
Region
Close to Delhi yet rural in parts, Haryana hosts Kurukshetra’s pilgrimage sites, the annual Surajkund Crafts Mela, Sultanpur bird sanctuary and historical battlefields around Panipat - accessible day trips from the capital region.
Why Visit Haryana #
Kurukshetra is a living snapshot of India’s epic past: temples, the Brahma Sarovar and sites linked to the Mahabharata attract pilgrims year-round. Visit at sunrise on the Sarovar for ritual bath scenes and quieter reflections - the place feels more meaningful than many over-commercialized pilgrimage towns.
Plan a visit around the Surajkund Crafts Mela (February) to see artisans from across India in one place - textiles, pottery and regional foods dominate. It’s crowded but worth it if you like handicrafts; come early and focus on particular crafts rather than trying to see everything.
Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary near Gurgaon is a surprisingly rewarding stop for winter birdwatchers, with migratory ducks, waders and raptors. It’s compact enough for a half-day visit and great for photography at the lakeside hides. Bring binoculars and expect local school groups on weekends.
Panipat’s battlefields and textile history draw history buffs and shoppers alike. Visit the Panipat Museum to understand three decisive battles that shaped north India, then check out local carpet and dhurrie workshops for handwoven pieces at prices lower than Delhi.
Morni Hills offers quick Himalayan foothill scenery close to Chandigarh: lakes, pine forests and short hikes that suit a relaxed weekend. It’s not about big peaks but rather accessible nature, rural villages and good roadside dhabas serving simple Punjabi breakfasts.

Getting to & Around Haryana #
Haryana is reached mainly via Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and Delhi’s major railway stations (New Delhi NDLS), with Chandigarh Airport (IXC) serving northern districts. Cities such as Gurugram and Faridabad are immediate commuter gateways from Delhi (30-60 minutes by road or metro). Major highways traverse the state and connect it to neighbouring Punjab, Himachal and Uttar Pradesh.
Much of Haryana forms part of the Delhi NCR commuter belt, so travel patterns are short, frequent trips into and out of Delhi with heavy peak traffic. Rural and western districts have sparser public transport and rely more on intercity buses and private vehicles than the densely served urban fringe.
- Trains - Haryana is well served by Indian Railways (Northern Railway zone) with major junctions at Ambala, Ludhiana, and Panipat that connect into the national network and Delhi. Many journeys within the state and into Delhi use regular intercity and passenger trains.
- Rental Car / Taxis - Road travel is often the fastest way to move between towns and to Delhi NCR; major national highways (including NH44/NH48 corridors) pierce the state and commuter traffic to Gurgaon and Faridabad is heavy during peak hours. Private hire and taxis are common for short trips.
- Buses - State-run Haryana Roadways and numerous private operators provide dense intercity services linking district towns and Delhi. Buses are frequent on trunk routes but less so on rural branch roads, where shared jeeps and minibuses operate.
- Metro & Local Transit - Parts of Haryana (Gurugram, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh) are integrated into the Delhi Metro network, offering fast commuter connections into Delhi and easing congestion for daily commuters.
Where to Stay in Haryana #
Haryana’s accommodation scene centers on business hotels and serviced apartments in Gurugram, with budget hotels in towns and emerging farm‑stay options in rural districts. Many travelers use Gurgaon as a base for Delhi-area business and short leisure trips.
Gurugram (Sohna Road, Golf Course Road) hosts the majority of upscale chains and serviced apartments catering to corporate travelers. Convenient for airport transfers and conference venues.
Faridabad, Panipat and Karnal offer practical budget hotels near highway exits and bus stations-suitable for overnight stops or cost-conscious travelers. Facilities are basic; check recent reviews for reliability.
Areas around Sohna, Rewari and the Aravalli foothills have farm stays offering village life, local food and outdoor activities. Ideal for short escapes from the city and family experiences.
In Gurgaon and leisure townships (e.g., near Sultanpur/Leisure Valley), serviced apartments and short-term rentals suit families and longer business stays. Look for properties with parking and easy metro/bus access.
On the state’s outskirts, resorts catering to events and weekenders provide pools, banquet halls and recreation-common near Karnal and Kurukshetra. Rates rise sharply during wedding season.
